Siphlophis compressus

A 'red vine snake' (Siphlophis {Tripanurgos} compressus) from Suriname. Possibly one of the prettiest red-eyed tricolor snakes from the Neotropics. I no longer have this particular snake in my collection , but the two that I had were strictly lizard/frog feeders. Very timid arboreal snakes that, like many thin bodied tropical snakes, need a certain amount of moisture/hydration within the husbandry scheme or will quickly dehydrate. And, like snakes of another thin bodied arboreal genus (Imantodes), Siphlophis has enlarged vertebral scales - possibly an adaptation or result from being light-bodied and arboreal. A friend of mine had some Siphlophis cervinus (Liana snakes) which laid 1-2 clutches of eggs.

My snakes only ate lizards and frogs but refused mice. They are very beautiful mild mannered snakes that are only occasionally imported.

Beautiful snakes! I think Dan Scolora (DTS) was able to reproduce these in captivity.

Not to take anything away from Dan, but it was my understanding that he imported a gravid female....living where he does, he has the opportunity to cherrypick as well as directly import snakes that eventually produce young from already gravid females (e.g. Thmanodynastes, Oxybelis, Helicops, Oxyrhopus etc).

Ah, I did not know that. I knew he has handpicked many, but didn't know it was already gravid female that had produced.

While working in Suriname we fed these(Siphlophis compressus) Iguana Iguana, they do well in captivity although i never kept any for any length of time but the names you mentioned sound familiar from a time ago, so they must thrive, yes these ,Siphlophis compressus, Xenodon werneri and believe it or not a species very similar to Rhinobothryum bovali or even lentiginosum(Suriname), that were also collected near the local of the Alcoa alluminum plant in Suriname , and other " rear fanged "snakes , all went to the same person hear in Florida , these were incidental takes or finds from the "rare" frogs days.

Addt'l. Xenodon werneri, are full of piss and vigor as most Xenodons and feed on toads, nice snakes !
