| Hello Soleya,
nice photos and nice animals. Do you have any photos of the back, the horn from the front (closeup) and the tail of the Montenegro-Ammod. shown above? On these photos it looks more like V. a. meridionalis.
Best regards, Rainer | |

| To me they look all like Vipera ammodytes meridionalis, mine are the same coloration like last two pics with greenish tail. | |

| Hello Albert, yes, they do but the upper 5 photos are under the title V. a. meridionalis which is right. The animal on the photos labelled "Vipera ammodytes ammodytes (Montenegro)" looks like a meridionalis to me as well as to you. But I want to make absolutely sure. There are V. a. ammodytes in Montenegro that look very much like meridionalis if you look at their pattern but if you look at their tails AND especially the scalation of their horns you can be sure what they are. Quite a number of V.a.a. in Montenegro can have yellow or even green tails. Therefore I would like to see the photos I asked for. The color of the body is no hint at all, V.a.a. from Montenegro can have almost any color and also meridionalis can be very variable in color.
Regards, Rainer

| Hey Rainer and Albert, since Soleya is a bit under the weather and not feeling well, I'll answer this post The reddish animal labeled "Montenegro" here was actually sold to me as Vipera ammodytes meridionalis, that is correct. I bought these at the snakeday last year, from a guy who could not speak German, or English.. and he was watching the table for a friend who was in the restaurant. I asked him a few times if these were animals from the vicinity of lake Scutari, and he answered me with "Yes, yes" When I decided to buy the snakes (in a hurry, my own table was unattended) I gave him money, he gave me snakes, papers were signed, and I was gone. When I came home that night, the papers did (and still do) read "Vipera ammodytes meridionalis" Now, like Rainer said, the animals from around Scutari are incredibly polymorph, and also have green/ yellow tails, and lots of different body-coloration. So, given the guys statement that the animals were from Scutari, I dropped the meridionalis part, and decided to label these "ammodytes" Only recently (after your comments in fact) I dug up the papers, and saw the scalation on the rostal horn a bit better.. and, like you, I am now convinced that this is, in fact "Vipera ammodytes meridionalis" Come to think of it.. I think if I had asked if these animals came from Australia, I would have gotten the same "Yes, yes" for an answer.. So, all in all, you guys are absolutely right, and after hibernation.. I need a new tank to split them up.. After hibernation we'll post new pics. I have old ones, but those are horrible, and Soleya is way better at making pictures than I am. peter | |
