| Ahhh ... the redbelly You could see so often in Steve Irwins Diary ... I love this snake. I read it is not extremly venomous, this is contrary to what we were told from Steve Irwin. What is the truth? | |

| Guenter,
P. porphyriacus are not too bad, by large Elapid standards. They will wreck your week with pain, swelling, nausea, vomiting and possible local necrosis, but there have not been any documented deaths for a very long time. Definitely something you want to avoid, but not anywhere near as bad as most other large elapids.
Cheers,
WW | |

| Thanks Wolfgang! So not a typical neurotoxic elapid venom but sounds more like a viper-style-venom? No real vipers in Australia so these elapids fill the space for it? | |

| Guenter,
I don't think it has anything to do with P. porphyriacus filling in for vipers. The generalisation of elapids=neurotoxic, vipers = haemotoxic is a gross overgeneralisation anyway.
The Australian elapid that definitely fills the niche of vipers is of course Acanthophis, but not in terms of venom, since Acanthophis have one of the purest neurotoxic actions of any elapid venom.
Cheers,
WW | |

| From all i know, it is like with other Australian snakes. Due to the export regulations they are not easy to get outside Australia. Please correct me, if I am wrong. | |

| nice snakes hendrik, I had some of these in the 1970s, they came from a breeder in France. but they were easier to come by then. Mine only bred once which was a suprise as i was sold them as both females. If I remember they were very calm and never tried to bite. would love some more but I have only ever seen 2 pairs for sale in the last 10 years and I would of needed to sell my house to pay for them.I have seen some at a couple of shows in south Carolina once but i think getting them back to the Uk would be a pain as the guy selling them was not interested in paperwork. I know where there is a pair in Scotland but upto now they have showed no signs of reproducing. I only know this as he has some baby Lachesis Muta for sale I am interested in. So if you ever get young please put me on the long list. Paul | |

| My absolutley favourite snake!!! Hope I have and breed them one day
They are very rare in collections given the fact it is very common and widespread in Australia. I'we read many interesting papers about them. They are venomous but they have claimed no fatalities yet and most of the cases antivenom is aplied just like a precaution mesure. | |

| it is a shame our government does not allow the export of our animals. this species is very common out here and make an excellent pet. i believe the initial pics in this thread were taken in australia, judging from the native australian plant leaf litter. | |

| Pseudechis porphyriacus is the most common species i encounter here in Eastern Australia, its seems to hang onto existence longer in suburban areas such as in Suburban Sydney longer than any of the other large elapid species. They actually make great pets,i have one which is in no way aggresive and has a mostly curious nature. My only complaint of this species is the lack of colour variation, although the ventral scales vary in colour hue and ive found one with a complete brown head, there probably the most uniform appearance of any snake species ive seen.
