| Hello Caroline,
yes, Malpolon sp. (apart from moilensis) are a real hit. I used to breed them in the seventies and found and watched many of them in nature and up to now I did not see any other snake, neither in the terrarium nor in the wild, that was so curious and interested in everything that happens in its surrounding. and though they bite like hell if you catch them in thevwild, most of them get calm and used to being handled within a few days.
Cheers, Rainer | |

| Hello Caroline,
Moilensis is much more specialized on reptiles (mainly lizards) as food. I have friends who tried to keep them, none ever accepted mice as food though they are said to feed on rodents too in nature. I would not catch lizards here (where I live we have Podarcis muralis and Lacerta viridis) for giving them to snakes. And I also would not buy wid-caught lizards for that pupose. I kept and bred the bigger species from Tunisia, from Morocco (up to 2m long) and from coastal Croatia. All but the Moroccan ones (they were huge old wild-caught specimens when I got them) became calm very soon and most of them could be handled like cornsnakes. And when I raised babies, they all were very calm and all of them took mice from the beginning. The only problem I had was that they immediately climbed on me when I opened the terrarium and I never could clean,... the terrarium without permanently having to put them back into it. It looked like it was a game for them. I could watch M. monspessulanus fuscus in Croatia and Montenegro over long periods when I worked with Vipera ammodytes there and sometimes it seemed like they got used to my presence letting me come as close as ca 1,5 m and only watching what I was doing. Usually their flight-distance towards humans is over 5m. Besides from what I have seen in captive ones this too shows that they are one of the species of snakes that are able to learn quite quickly. One of these Malpolon (ca 1,2m long) shared the same hiding- place with a Vipera ammodytes (ca 55cm long) and I could often see them lying in the sun side by side. At least in this case it was not a predator-prey relationship though I know that Malpolon monsp. also eat snakes, including V. ammodytes.
Cheers, Rainer | |

| Hi Rainer, you are right, MM are fantastic snakes and become quite accustomed to you, even big wc specimens! I came back from south of France (last week) and i saw a few of them...they always fascinate me how wary they are, and fast and noisy when they fly away! They are always eating well in captivity and breed readily! One of my favorite snake! R. | |

| Hello Patrick,
glad to have found another fan of these magnificent snakes. I think they just show you how they want to be treated and (with some exceptions) soon regard you as not dangerous and not a reason for defending themselves.
And it is great sport to catch them (I don´t mean for taking them home), mostly they are the winners, as you write, they are wary and fast, even more than the Whipsnakes.
Cheers, Rainer | |

| Now i feel like i really have to look them up a bit closer, you make them sound so facinating And i even might get lucky stumbling upon a few nice animals in the future. So you really dont know anyone who keeps them and breeds them now? Its really sad to hear as you explain how they are now in limited addition like the intrest for keeping them maby died out.. Both becuse you make them sound like grate snakes to keep and becuse whenever the intrest for them resurface its right back to wc animals, even if there ware ever cb's on the market. Cant they stop breeding corns insteed .. Best regards / Caroline | |

| Hello Caroline,
you hit the point - can´t they stop breeding corns instead. I´m sorry, I don´t know anybody who keeps and breeds Malpolon. A friend of mine has been searching some (cb-ones) for years already - no success. If you will come to Houten, we can talk about this if you want, I have a table there in the non-venemous part.
Best regards, Rainer | |

| Hello Caroline,
maybe we´ll be able to talk somewhere else - hamm or so. I think most of the snakes I offer at Houten (mostly eurasian "Elaphe" in the "old" meaning) won´t be too interesting for you anyway. If you are mainly or exclusively interested in Opistoglyphs, the only interesting species might be Philodryas baroni.
Cheers, Rainer | |
