Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

The Malayan Pit Viper (Calloselasma rhodostoma KUHL 1824) is a notorious venomous snake native to Northern Malaysia, Thailand, and Java Island in Indonesia. This snake prefers bamboo thickets, agricultural plots, and coastal forests as habitat. In the wild, small rodents and ground birds comprise a large part of its diet; lizards and frogs, however, may also be taken. Being a sedentary, short-tempered, fast-striking snake, C. rhodostoma has caused quite a number of human fatalities in its range annualy, especially to people whose times are spent working in plantations.

In captivity, which I had experienced in two separate occasions: 1) while doing apprentice work with the Swiss herpetoculturists residing in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, sometime in 1991, and 2) at Avilon Zoo in Montalban, Rizal, in 2007, the species requires temperature of between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius and RH 70-80% in order to thrive. An occasional basking under natural sunlight will certainly benefit the snake's in health and stimulate its appetite. Feeding sometimes is difficult if the snake is freshly acquired. As soon as the snake acclimatizes to a captive condition then feeding will never be of a problem any more, as long as a supply of mice never run out. Water is taken freely from a large water bowl and the snake loves to soak in it. A snake hook is use for lifting up the snake and restraining is done similarly as with other species of terrestrial vipers The snake should also undergo a complete veterinary workup periodically for the possible presence of endoparasites, especially round worms.

It's a pity that I wasn't able to experience breeding the species because we always have only one specimen in the collection. I'm sure that, in the near future, I would be given the opportunity to experience breeding a pair of C. rhodostoma in captivity at Herpaworld.

Nice species!

A friend of mine always refers to this snakes as being biological landmines.
Razz

I think this species is highly underappreciated. They are just to cheap.

You're right, Jelmer. They sure are biological landmines lying-in-wait for somebody to step on them in the bushes and... BANG!

Anyways, I just love that sinister-looking characteristic of this snake... it gives me that kind of weird feelings whenever I handle it. Very Happy

The snakes of this spec. my friend had in his shop were easy to handle. They show no agressive behavier.
Maybe it has to do that they were captive breeds

I did not breed'em last year, because almost nobody is looking for these nasty snappers.
But if you guys overthere want some, i'll put'em together right now.
