Daboia Palestinae Hibernation

Hey guys ive got a question regarding hibernation in Daboia Palestinae at what time of the year and at what temperature do you guys hibernate this species.

Hello Agust,

I think the correct latin name for the species is now Vipera palaestinae (Werner, 1938) - see here. So at the moment the only species in Daboia genus is Daboia russelii (Shaw & Nodder, 1797). I think - please somebody correct me if I am wrong, as I know many verry competent people is participating on this forum Smile

This is a great species that is verry high on my wish list, but every chance I get - or I can't reach it (financially) or something else go wrong Sad

Anyway, I red quite a lot about this species and I woul recommend you looking at seasonal averages in Jerusalem (as V. palaestinae is the most common venomous snake in Israel, I think one can find it in Jerusalem too Smile

). At this weather chart you can see what temperatures are in specific months: klick. In captivity is accaptable (and reasonable) to hibernate them in winter months in the country you live Smile

Trutnau (2004) recommends hibernation period of 3-4 months at temperatures 8 - 15°C.

Hello Agust,

a friend of mine (in Austria) used to breed this species regularly for many years. He hibernated them by turning off the lamps (the terrarium was only heated by the lamps) during winter for 3-4 months. The snakes had 15-16° during that time. From spring to autumn they had up to 40° underneath the lamp with the opportunity to go to cooler places (down to 20) whenever they wanted.

If you have only one specimen or if you have more and don´t want to breed them you don´t have to hibernate them as long as they don´t stop eating.

Ok thanks Rainer i only have one female at 90cm long shes adult by now and the thing is she did stop eating about a month ago which i guessed would indicate i shuold hibernate her but i will only hibernate her for a short period of time and then ill put he back up.

Ok,

as she stopped eating, it´s better to hibernate her.
Probably she will become active in spring when temp. rises and show you that you can take her out again.

yeah i didnt think she was just being a tricky feeder because she would have tried to eat me or the snake hook a few months ago and an animal doesent reach her size by refusing meals.
Anyway thanks for all the help with this beutiful species i will hibernate her until spring.

Reptile Database lists palaestinae as member of the genus Vipera - no synonym "Macrovipera palaestinae" is given there.

So i think the current scientific name for this species is Vipera palaestinae WERNER 1938 (without parentheses then, as WERNER described it already as Vipera in 1938.

Maybe our Systematicus will post some remarks to this problem? How "good" is Vipera at this moment, and could there be changes in the future due to further research?
