| Maybe one of my better mamba shots. I'd keen to hear what You think about it. | |

| Hi Guenter,
nice shot! But you have "improved" the Bokeh (for the non-photographic people: the quality of the background unsharpness) afterwards? It loungs a bit weird around the head area of the snake.

| Hi Hendrik,
Especially around the head there was nearly nothing changed. The green in the background and the blue at the right were indeed changed. The shadows on the head come from the flashes. I used a camera flash and a slave here.

| Thanks Stuart. Of course the details are no secret at all:
Camera: Canon 5D II Lens: Sigma 150/2.8 Macro HSM ISO 125 Exposition mode "M" 1/160s f/10 Correction 0 EV Flash 580EX on the camera (reduced ca. 1 stop), studio flash Elinchrom 400 from the low right, when I remeber correctly Taken through glass (it's a mamba and I am not very brave!) Postprocess in PS, Background was reworked a bit (most of the green is not there in the original shot)

| Wow, this is a wonderful photo that I like very much. I can't even believe it's taken through the glass! I love how sharp the head and neck are and how the flash refelcted more off of the head and brought "the subject" to the attention more. The geometric shape of the scales on the body loop to the left of the neck is insanely beautiful and the detail is really cool. You managed to make a snake that many people fear look beautiful and, in my opinion, even cute. Is it just me, or is he smiling? | |

| They are certainly wrongly feared, Derek, they deserve respect. - If the folks could learn to respect them, then, they could live together happily, and co-exist. Fear isn't the answer IMO. Caution, yes, Fear? OTT in my opinion. |

Don't look mambas always somehow "smiling"? The photo itself was rather easy. The snake was there, the light to be set and that's it. It did not move a lot, so no difficulty. The respect goes to the snake and it's caretaker for being in such a perfect shape!

We sure do. As far as i know, Guenter posted one on VenomLand - but i didn't find it again. Here are two "gapers", one an adult polylepis, shot by Guenter, and a juvenile. http://www.reptilienzoonockalm.at/dendrpoly.htm

I can't believe it was taken through glass either, the detail is so crisp.

| OMG - that short lens and no glass? My respect! Stuart, a good macro lens does help a lot here. Also external flashes help much, because the light comes from the side then.
And yes, I am always working with RAW.
