Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

Hello Fabian,

all reptiles are protected by law in Croatia, for several years also the venemous ones.
If you get caught catching / collecting protected animals or plants or carrying any with you, you can get a lot of trouble, especially if you are in a protected area. That may be very expensive, up to 7000€.
You also will hardly get any permit to export reptiles indigenous to Croatia.
Istria has a lot of extremely interesting places for herping, concerning amount of species mainly in the lower coastal part but July/August are not just the best time to do so there.

Regards,
Rainer

I thought something like this already, but I will do only a little bit of fieldherping.
There are much more things to do... Smile

Had the little hope, that some animals are not protected, because I don´t know local laws in Croatia, but I suppose they were similar to Europe...

best wishes Fabian

What Rainer said is apsolutely correct. Back in a days there were a lot of people from now EU camming over spring and summer and collecting reptiles and at that time there were no laws. Now days situation is rather different and all reptiles are protected and, just like Rainer said, you can get in a lot of troubles if you do that.
In istria especially people are very sensitive to that mainly because of Italians camming over and taking birds and testudo hermani for food.... so with strict laws and high fines they stoped that!

Hello Fabian,

doing fieldherping will probably not be a problem. But be careful, even tools that might be used for catching reptiles might bring you into troubles, especially in Istria, like Neven wrote. If you will be in a protected ares don´t touch any protected species, not even for a photo. Even if you get caught and one of your photos shows that you have done so, you may get problems.
Only venemous snakes have not been protected in Croatia until several years ago but now they are, like all other indigenous reptiles partly due to intensive work of my friend Neven.

Much luck and fun in Istria, it is a beautiful country, maybe you even find a Malpolon (might be interesting for you especially), they may be active on hot summerdays too but they are not very common in Istria.

Great country, nice people and a beautiful landscape. I have spend only short time for fieldherping and I found only one Natrix tesselata, Lacerta vivipara, amelanistic crayfish and Lacerta viridis. No luck with Vipera ammodytes or Malpolon.
However, I have so many Butterflies and Dragonflies like never before.
