| Hey all, after long and careful consideration I have decided to go with this species for my first opistoglyph. I think they will make a reatively easy introduction into rear fanged snakes - I wanted to ease in gently, without being as gentle as getting something like Heterodon nasicus, for example. I just wondered what peoples experiences with these are? fun to keep? What sort of enclosures do people use etc? I will be sure to get photos up once mine arrives!
Many thanks, Alex | |

| Hello Alex,
excellent decision! They are extremely interesting snakes, easy to keep, easy to handle and can learn very quickly. All of these that I ever had never attempted to bite me, I think this approach of your´s really is a gentle one. They need a high terrarium with branches, they like to climb and you rarely see them on the ground. If you will breed them, offer a hiding-place somewhere up among branches, they will not lay their eggs in a box on the ground. There is a good article (in German) about Philodryas in general and P. baroni in special by Andreas Hohmeister (Sauria, Berlin, 1999, 21 (2): page 9-21)
You write; "...once mine arrives" - will you get only one?
I wish you good luck and much fun with this species, Rainer

| Thanks for the reply Rainer, I am looking forward to working with them - not only my first opistoglyph but my first truly arboreal species also. I will try to track down that article and brush up on my high school German! Unfortunately it does look as if I will only have the one to begin with, at present I simply don't have room for a pair, maybe next season I shall get a mate for the individual I get this time, we'll see. | |

| Philodryas is an interesting genus and baroni is a good choice to start with. You can have a look at folllowing pages
www.philodryas.com by Rémi Ksas and http://www.rear-fanged.com/philodryas.html
The article by Hohmeister is excellent and I hope to get some P.psammophidea from Hohmeister to build my breeeding group of P.psammophidea.

| Thanks Fabian, I have been lurking around on your site for some time!!
In the future I would like to try my hand at Pseudoxenodon and Telescopus species, but I don't feel I have the resources/experience to take on wild caught lizard/amphib feeders at the moment. Maybe in a couple of years I will make it to Hamm or Houten and strike lucky and find some for sale though!
In the meantime, from what I hear so far, P. baroni is going to be a lovely species to keep, I'm very excited. I'm also told that they are quite an easy species to breed, would people agree with that?

| Sure, Philodryas baroni is a perfect choice. It's an easy and really interesting specie. One of the most interesting snakes I have ever kept, in my opinion.
And yes, breed them isn't difficult.

| I finally collected this little lady on 22/08/10. I am very pleased with this choice for my first rear fang - I think she is exactly what I needed to begin my journey into opistoglyphous animals. Being that I am used to dealing only with boids, even my more aggressive animals are very slow by comparison to this lass. Given this fact I am glad I didn't jump in with something that is not only fast but willing to bite and potentially has a more serious effect to the bite! I hadn't realised how tiny the hatchlings were going to be, I am looking forward to her growing up a little! I hope you guys like and I will keep you posted! | |
