| Why should the latter be called "Formosa phase"?
These aberrant hood pattern are known from Formosa (Taiwan) specimens along with typical chevron shaped patterns, different body colourations (like your bright colored, brown or black specimens) can also be found there. Wether hood pattern nor body colour do allow to pick one of these color morphs out and call it "Formosa". Unfortunately, the name "Formosa phase" or "Formosa morph" already exists and is used for Naja kaouthia specimens with aberrant, atra-like hood pattern. regards Peter

| I call it such precisely because its identical the the type of pattern mutation as seen in Naja kaouthia......Since these are WC from mainland China, i guess its safe to assume that they don't occur specifically in Taiwan... Perhaps u have a better suggestion for such a mutation in Naja atra from mainland China? - Peter Zürcher wrote:

| I would also not refer to is as formosa if it is from mainland china. Although I am at a loss as to what to name it. Either way those are some very nice snakes you have there. Thanks for sharing. | |

what's the reason for that name then? - Quote :

aha I hope i've got this right: You call them "Formosa" because a pattern variation of another species is called that way - this has already led to some confusion in the past. What's really the reason for that? More confusion? - Quote :

Do we really have to label every colour or pattern aberration? regards Peter

| Surely this is not the first time one of these snakes has popped up?
What else has it been referred to then other than what he is calling it?

| Not the first time its popped up and have not seen another name that has been used so why not us "Formosa Phase"? I'd rather have a name for something other than saying "oh the one with funky pattern from mainland China, but u can't call it Formosa Phase because its not from Taiwan but it looks exactly like those Formosa Phase Naja kaouthia".....if i had to say that every time i was referring to that snake i'd need a lot of drinks! - Brett Franklin wrote:

| For sure.
Perhaps this is a good place for a few suggestions from members? And the winner gets a pair of the first offspring as a prize :-)

| If you breed 100% HET animals, let me know please.
I really like the albino the most, even more than the leucistic one, awesome snake. Are you that lucky that they're all males?
Cheers, Ro. | |
