| Hello everyone,
This forum was recommended to me by another venomous reptile keeper. I have been a member of sites like venomousreptiles.org and venomdoc.com for a few years now and I have been keeping venomous reptiles for 5 years.
I am a resident of Ontario, Canada and in the army full-time. I work part time as the reptile manager for a small private zoo near my home. My duties include maintaining enclosures, assessing the health and husbandry requirements of all the reptiles and diagnosing and treating as many reptilian health problems as possible because there are no reptile vets within a 2 hour drive of the zoo. I am the only person at that zoo who acquires and works with venomous snakes.
None of the venomous reptiles are on display to the public yet because in my opinion, we don't have an appropriate facility for such things. We are planning an expansion next season and a hot display room will be constructed.
Currently we have A. contortrix, B. schlegelii and A. clorechis. In the near future, I will be working with N. kaouthia and T. trigonocephalus.
I am extremely interested in the toxicology, management and treatment of snakebite and I spend a large amount of my spare time researching and learning.
This forum seems to have a solid base of knowledgeable keepers and I look forward to sharing information and learning from everyone here.
Cheers,
Luke Halstead | |

| Hi Luke, and welcome aboard!
Rather interesting species you (will) work with. Btw, wouldn't it be a nice idea to keep Ontario's one and only native hot snake, the Eastern Massasauga, Sistrurus catenatus catenatus, at that small local zoo? Not just that this is a fascinating species, but showing them to public might also get them a better reputation which might be helpful protecting them.
Regards

| Peter,
I would love to be able to keep Massasaugas but they are protected due to provincial legislation. Right now, the private zoo I work at is not registered with CAZA (Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums) so it would be difficult to obtain one legally. It would be nice to have a specimen or two to educate the public.
I sometimes go herping in the Massasauga's native range and I unfortunately find some very negative attitudes among the local people about them. Many are killed on sight by he locals. If a widespread education campaign could be launched in te area I think it would do that species a lot of good.
Cheers,
Luke | |

| The zoo is in Eganville. It's pretty small right now and the venomous stuff isn't on display to the public. We might be expanding to a bigger location next season so we'll build a hot room appropriate for the public then.
Yes this site seems good. I've been having fun on it so far! | |

| Bostjan, The fishing is very good wherre I live. I am far away from any major cities in the Eastern part of Ontario. There are lots of small lakes and rivers. This summer I caught a Pike as long as my arm! Message me before you come down and I'll tell you where all the good spots are! | |
