| Hi folks: In my computer had pics of Desert Lancehead, the common name is "Jergon de Costa". The sps are: Bothrops pictus and Bothrops roedingeri. Many people talk about two sps, another people is the same... In my opinion is the same sp. What is your opinion?? listen about these sps?? Greetings from Perú [img] [/img] [img] [/img] [img] [/img] [img] [/img]

| Could be the same species but I'm not that much of an expert. They have different colour. Better shot of the head would be helpfull. There is a lot so called species really being psevdonyms for only one species. Also with Acanthophis genus and Oxyuranus scutellatus and some other. When more mtDna tests will be made we'll have a better understanding hopefully.

| Unfortunatly, the most recent phylogenetic study of the Bothrops, the one which suggests splitting the genus into five genera (Bothrops, Bothrocophias, Bothriopsis, Rhinocerophis and Bothropoides), did not include B. roedingeri in their analysis... I don't think the taxon has been included in any phylogenetic analysis so far... I'm guessing that Campbell and Lamar (2004) probably discussed the taxon but I don't have the book on me at the moment...
Here is a link to the paper on the revision of the Bothrops genus which I previously mentioned: http://biology.ucf.edu/~clp/publications/Fenwicketal.pdf | |

| BKK: The DNA study is very important for these sps.. because the morphology is very same in many cases.. Alex: Thx for the article, i was reading, and is very interesting. In my job (serpentarium) have many desert lanceheads, and i will take a pics of head... Greetings from Perú p.d. Send the another Bothrops roedingeri pic | |

| Lanceheads are really something special. I'd like to include B.Asper, B.Alternatus and B.Insularis once in my collection. Owesome genus. Nice animals Walter.
