Please beware, to register at venomland you are requested to use your full name (first and family name) - nicknames are not allowed and will be not activated! thx Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

| Hello, we took the chance to make some short trips to different habitats in south of carinthia. I really love the scree slopes and those dry landscapes near Villach. My highlight was definitely the find of Vipera a. ammodytes (" illyrica"), in my opinion the most beautiful variation of V. ammodytes Female, about 60-70cm and one little male, about 30cm In the same area we saw Podarcis muralisand Lacerta viridis. There were lots of intereseting invertebrates too, many little wolfspiders, Lithobius forficatus,... ...and one beautiful wasp spider Argiope bruennichi. We even found some Euscorpius sp. under little rocks on some shady places between the scree slopes. Then we searched for dice snakes Natrix tessellata near the river "Gail", what is quite easy on some spots. big female ...and again lots of lizards. L. viridis Further up in the mountains there are many good spots for common adders Vipera berus. I won't bother you with habitat-pic's but I can't get enough of this place On rainy days we found an alpine salamander Salamndra atra... ...and one common newt Lissotriton vulgaris (land camouflage). Hope you enjoy the pics regards, Markus

| Yes, you are right. The ammodytes from this spot are realy nice. I know this place very well. Much time is gone, i visited the last time! This post remember me, that I has to go there again in the future. A very special place for the southern Carinthia area. And the ammodytes from this place looks very differend to the ammodytes from sorounding areas. But one question: Is it realy lacerta muralis? Corect me if I´m wrong, is this place not one of the places in Carinthia, where you can find L. horvathi? I´m not an lizzard specialist, but I heare from this years ago. | |

Yes, it's Podarcis muralis - look at it's tail - all segments of equal size. regards Peter | |

| Thank you guys!
You also see it on the first lizard picture that it is P. muralis, look at the head-scales: frontonasale doesn't touch the rostrale --> P. muralis. And (i don't mentioned that) the habtitats we visited aren't high enough for Iberolacerta, what I read the occupy areas from 700- 1700 meters above sea level.
regards Markus

| At my last visit in carinthia we spent some time at the river Gail. Lots of stones and bushes along the riverbank with some places with low vegetation... The weather was cloudy but sun came trough from time to time. We started in the morning and found 2 little aesculapian snakes, both pretty well-fed. Then we found the first dice snakes, some in the meadow/bushes... ...some lay in the sun at the riverbank. In the meantime we found a big Zamenis, too. We also saw lots of beautiful green lizards, Lacerta viridis | |

| Some pictures from the last days in carinthia. Beside taking pictures at the reptile zoo, we also looked around for snakes in the wild, of course We visited a spot near Villach and within the first minutes in tha habitat we found the first, a few minutes later the second viper! Both (actually all 4 individuals we saw that day) were gravid females. a darker female, with an orange tail and quite red belly... We also found some grass snakes... regards Markus | |

| Hi, and again I spent some time in carinthia, a few days in september and last week. Beside the usual visit at Peter Zürchers reptile zoo, we decided to look for Vipera ammodytes again, but wanted to try some different spots. We drove to the area around the Wörthersee. The weather was quite hot, so not the best conditions, but we've been lucky at some shady scree slopes... Then, in a whole in a concrete block, a nice viper taking a bath On our next day-trip Peter and I met Rainer Fesser and we had a look at some isolated places in the area of the Lavanttal... A great tour and I really appreciated the "hunt" with two really experienced herpers! another place with lots of Mantis religiosa (brown and green) and another little viper The last in days in carinthia have been quite cold, with some sunny hours, so we took our chance and had a look in the area around the Wörthersee again... We didn't exept to see many snakes, so we were really suprised to see the first individual after 10 steps away from the car On the second day we were lucky again... nice female a big male and another male It was a great time, as always in carintha and I'm really looking forward to vistit this spots in spring again enjoy the pictures regards Markus | |

| Hello Markus,
for me too it was a pleasure being out there with you and Peter. Your photos are great again and show the beauty of the snakes and the habitat.
Finn: Yes, it is a beautiful country for herping but also for many other activities. If you should ever go to Carynthia, don´t forget to visit Peter Zürcher´s reptile-zoo, that would be a mistake.
Best regards, Rainer | |
