Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

Hey Aias,

I think you will have to search for a long time. As far as I know, I´m the only one in Germany (maybe in whole Europe) keeping a Bitis arietans x Bitis gabonica-Hybrid, a male, and it took me nearly 10 years to find one. But if you should be lucky enough to get a female Hybrid, I will be happy to go for a breeding project with you.

Best regards

Frank

Hi guys.

As both species occur widely sympatric, I would guess, they're not able to produce fertile offspring with each other. Any experiences yet with backcrossing your male hybrid-Bitis to at least the one or other parental species, Frank?

Curious

Peter

Sorry to say, but I think it is a very stupid idea to hybrid to different species! I can't imagine any reason to do so.

Hello

@ Peter: I didn´t try to breed him back to one of the source species and I won´t. It is a nice animal but if he is fertile he has to proof it on a female of his own kind (hopefully females are not sterile). Of course I have some doubts that he is able to produce any juveniles. But Hybrids of F1 Bitis nasicornis x Bitis gabonica have proofed to be fertile, so you never know. I don´t know the fertility of the F2 generation, so probably the line will end there.

@ Tommy: The Hybrid is a wild caught one and no artificial production of a breeder. It does exist in nature and as it looks so amazingly phantastic, I don´t see why I shouldn´t keep it. I don´t want to start a discussion about keeping hybrids, just take a look
at the picture.

Would you say he is a ugly one?

Frank: If it's done by "the Nature" you should of course not be blamed for it. What I ment by my somewhat harsh comment (sorry for that) was that I think it's important to keep different species pure when the sources of wild caught animals decrease.
Oh yes, it's a beautiful snake no doubts about that.
Kind Regards,
Tommy

At this point i would like to say that i am against hybrids too. At least the ones that are produced by humans. The bloodlines of the species must be kept pure if we want to say that we own the "X" or "Y" species. Every breeder should be proud to produce pure animals and work with the animal that he loves. If any hybrid is produce that must be kept separated and only be bred for the purposes of study.

The only reason i would like to keep a bitis arietans x bitis gabonica hybrid is that it is a "natural" one. And i am in love with it!

I would breed the animal from Frank with Carsten his arietans X nasicornis. Shocked

Cheers, Ro.
