- A nice reddish one Albert,
for me it looks like you was on an differend spot than the times before. Because this ammodytes looks not similar to the last one. I have a few spots that I regularly visit, they have not much distance between themselves and that V.ammodytes is from the same place as others. - Peter van Issem wrote:

All the years when I was there, on good spots, I have had bad weather (rain, rain,....) This year it looks better ;-) If you find the time for a short stop in Slovenia, feel free to contact me and I will show you some nice ammodytes in our country As already Peter Zürcher said, it is normal for neonates/juveniles that they have this reddish belly and I saw this too by some adults which is not so unusual for this location. I tried to find some old pictures of C.austriaca from my archive to compare the head markings but I could not find any and this snake was the only one I found today at that place, where they are quite common. Here is another picture from the same snake

| Yes, males will match for this. It was around 10-15 years ago, but I remember very good, because it was only this one that has shown this coloration. And over the years I´ve found more than 50 C. austriaca all over in Germany , Italy , France and only one in Austria. But, such things happends when you have a walk with the dog and has no Camera with me. | |

| Very nice snakes again Albert,
and like you and Peter wrote, the smal one shows this coloration! The last two days I have visit some places in Austria where C. austriaca and V. ammodytes lives, but I can´t find a Coronella. Today I´m thinking to went to Italy, because the weather is very cloudy here, and for north Slowenia it looks not better than on my place.

| Hi Albert, It seems to me, that you want to be a Coronella Specialist ;-) But allways nice snakes. BTW: I was for some hours in Slowenia, but only in the border part to Carinthia, we have had a walk for two hours, but it was a point of very high elevation and it was foggy and a little bit to cold to find something. Maby e the next time! | |
