Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

Hi all,

my name is Hans Breuer, I'm an amateur herper and nature photographer currently based in Kuching, Sarawak, Borneo, where I relocated after twenty-two years of life in Taiwan.

After many years of working with reptiles and amphibians in Taiwan, in spring 2010 the opportunity arose to write a 6000-word cover story about the island’s herpetofauna for the inaugural print issue of “Herp Nation”. Reader resonance was very positive, and many stated their interest in an entire book about my adventures searching for and photographing snakes in the wilds of this beautiful and ecologically rich island. I complied, and now the book is finally out. Here are more details for your kind perusal:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"A Cobra Hijacked My Camera Bag! - Snakes And Stories From Taiwan"

is now available online (apart from Amazon, B&N, The NIle and al the other usual suspects, the book is also available through BookDepository where anyone in a wide range of
countries can order the book for just a little more than the US price and get free shipping).

Here's the table of contents:

Prologue – Why did it have to be snakes...and why in Taiwan?
Herping in Taiwan – An Overview
Cobras – Rice Ladle With Attitude
Ratsnakes - The Fast and the Furious
Vipers – Clint Eastwoods of Snakedom
Krait – Satans Rubber Toy
Rear-Fanged – Daggers in the Back
Miscellaneous - The Weird and the Wonderful
Pangolin – The Beast That Time Forgot

And here's the back cover blurb:

The herp is on! Hans Breuer searches for a new pet ratsnake in Taipei restaurants, loses a coral snake in his living room, confronts a cobra in complete darkness, and assumes unorthodox yogic postures to photograph kraits, habus, and bamboo snakes. Between the tree ferns of Taiwan's lush, rugged mountains, this brilliant amateur naturalist draws us along to experience a fantastic variety of snakes, along with turtles, civets, pangolins, and other representatives of the island's immense biodiversity.

During his constant search for reptiles and amphibians, Hans introduces the best of Taiwan with quirky humor, while educating the reader in remarkable detail. The author’s twenty-two years in Taiwan, and fluency in Mandarin Chinese, have given him a broad experience with all facets of Taiwan life, complementing his herpetological observations. We learn about food and drinking customs, dealing with curious police officers, and the aboriginal relationship to Taiwan’s rich animal life.

With this book in hand, you don't need a plane ticket to enjoy the thrill of herping Taiwan, but after reading Hans' adventures, you might just book your next vacation there!

For those of you who will actually buy a copy: I hope you'll have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.

For those of you who won't: please tell all those of your herping buddies who might - any publicity is good publicity :-)

And lastly: if you have connections to any venue or body that might be able to promote and maybe even sell the book (online forums, websites, herp shows, pet shops etc...), please let me know!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cheers, and thanks for reading!

Hans

Hello Hans, welcome here?
I'm looking forward to see some of your excellent pictures in our field-herping section now and then....

Thank you, Peter! Glad to oblige...what's popular around here? Kraits? Spitting cobras? Arboreal vipers? I could dig out a few older posts (haven't seen a lot of interesting venomous stuff in the last few weeks, unless you count seven-foot Boigas and the ever-present Bungarus fasciatus...)

Anything will be interesting, Hans, including "non-popular" species of course - even if i'm strongly focused on all spitting and non-spitting cobras.
We have many members here working with arboreal vipers, so these might be from interest too....
regards
