Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

Why you think the bark can bring mites? When you not sure, if it was in a terraria with mites before, place them in the oven with 200°C for some time (mabye 30 Minutes), I´m sure the mites will not survive. But you muste be sure, that the temps reach each part.
Or take something from outdoor. I never got mites when I used natural parts from outside. When I got mites, I got them from other stocks.
Sand and coco subtrate I use only for my tropical vipers. Not very natural to keep ammodytes on Coco ground.
You live in Bulgaria, you have only to go somewhere and have a look to see what you have to doe. I live in Germany, not the ,,home´´ of anny ammodytes. But, I take stones from outdoor too, place a dry root and dry oak- or  beech-leaves from outside. Maby a dry bush or some dry grass will be ok also. And ! Don´t doe to much! Let them come down, it takes some time, but doing to much is mostly ,,to much´´! If they display signs of sicknes you have to react, if not - take a drink, be cool and look!

Hello Kiril,

the temperature data as well as the hints for the soil Peter Zürcher gave you are accurate, the night-temperature must be significantly lower than the day-temp. And also at daytime it is important that the animals can retreat to a cooler place.
Also if you take some material from outside and there are snakes living in that area, heat it up to 80° (not enough for desinfection but easily enough for mites and their eggs) or pour it thoroughly with boiling water. If I would do what Peter van Issem can do in his place, I could easily get mites into my terraria as there are quite a lot of snakes (naturally) around my house and they also have their parasites on them.

"The enclosure is near the window." - Make sure that the sun can never overheat the terrarium. You know better than I how hot summers can be in Bulgaria and even a bit of heat from the sun in addition to the "normal" room-temperature in summer can be a big risk. 1°C above the optimum-temp of a snake makes it feel uneasy, 2-3° can be lethal. Therefore always offer them a cool place.

Why do you think the female is a V. a. montandoni? If I look at her tail on the photo in the link you gave us, I would not say she is. Did you get more information about the origin (geographical)? If she is and the males are not, you would breed hybrids with these animals.

Regards,
Rainer
