| Hi, we started the season with a few short trips in vienna's surroundings, so we checked some places in the Danube floodplains. We've been quite successfully in finding grass snakes, toads and different frogs on this place last year and wanted to see whats going on there now. The first impression was terrible, much has been cleared... (picture taken by a friend of mine) But on a sunny hill near the water, with dry bushes and plenty of caves, we finally found about a dozen of grass snakes From big adult females (~110cm)... ...to shy juveniles. More over we saw lots of Pelophylax sp., some Rana dalmatina... ... and a few common toads Bufo bufo. amplexus A little further on we spotted some signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus)... Away from the water, we found a beautiful sand lizard Lacerta agilis on a sunny glade in the "Wienerwald". We also encountered some invertebrates... assasin bug nursery web spider Pisaura mirabilis a Salticidae On our last trip, we weren't that happy with the weather, but it allowed us to discover some salamanders fire salamander Salamandra s. salamandra enjoy the pictures regards Markus | |

| Hi, after your nice comments (thx to all), I want to share a few pictures of todays trip to the northern top of the "Neusiedlersee", a shallow lake in Burgenland. The sky was cloudy, but cleared up from time to time and the temperature was around 22°C. It was awesome, after the first few steps into the wonderful habitat we already saw some sand lizards Lacerta agilis... ... and a juvenile aesculapian snake Zamenis longissimus. We had to move really slow to not upset her and obviously she wasn't delighted to be photographed from above... On the same eye-level it seemed that she felt more comfortable with our movements We left the little snake on the branch (above from where it was found) and moved on. Shortly after we saw this... We released the snake at the edge of the field, where it escaped in a tree a little further away. On our way back we also found a little grass snake Natrix natrix. We drove a few km to another spot, with better access to some small canals, where we heard and saw lots of european fire-bellied toads Bombina bombina. At the end we discovered a furrow spider Larinioides cornutusenjoy the pictures regards Markus | |

| Some time passed, and this fall we haven't been quite successful with our austrian herps... Yesterday, the weather was cold (~8°) and wet, so we decided to have a quick look into the Wienerwald, a forest at the city limits. After a few minutes in the woods: the first fire salamander, Salamandra s. salamandra Within half an hour we found three of these cute salamanders So even the "bad" weather has its advantages regards, Markus | |

| Hello Markus,
very nice photos again - thank you. You´re lucky, we haven´t got many reptiles out yet here in S-E-Austria, I haven´t seen any except one Lacerta viridis in my garden, full of winter-dirt. Still too cold, we had snow until a few days ago and in shadowy parts there still is snow.
The newt is a male Triturus dobrogicus, crest folded and still with the color they have as long as they are on land.
Best regards, Rainer | |

| Thanks Rainer, it's difficult with the newt, there are also Hybrids between dobrogicus and carnifex and unfortunatly I didn't take a picture of his belly.... We also found Triturus carnifex (or at least a specimen that looks like T. carnifex)... and some more of the Zamenis regards Markus | |

| Hello Markus,
"it's difficult with the newt" - you are right but with the location you mention I would not expect T. carnifex. I used to go herping around Vienna for many years but in that area I never saw T. carnifex north or east of Vienna, we only found them in the west.
"We also found Triturus carnifex (or at least a specimen that looks like T. carnifex)..." - it is puzzling as T. dobrogicus too can have the yellow or orange stripe but I think you had a closer look at her before you thought it might be a T. carnifex.
Thank you for the additional photos and info,
Rainer | |

| Hi, I'm not so fit with the newts, but I'll have a look there again... Last weekend we went herping at the "Hundsheimer Berge", a "mountain" east of vienna, near the boarder to slovakia... The sun was just comming out between the clouds so the best time to get some pictures of lizards heating themselfs up. european green lizards and a late riser We also found some quite interesting spiders... an Alopecosa sp. (schmidti or fabrilis I guess) ~15mm body length, so quite big for an austrian lycosid... and some beautiful flower crab spiders, Thomisus onustus regards Markus | |

| Hello Markus, like Peter wrote, very nice pictures again. I´m glad that winter is over though it hasn´t been too hard here.
On March 16th. I made my first field trip this year. I found a hibernation den in a place with Vipera ammodytes close to where I live. The area is very small and the population has only been discovered a few years ago. I saw 6 males, all of them hadn´t even started to prepare for their springtime-shed, it looked like the males had just started to end their hibernation. One of the males is about 90cm long. If the weather will be suitable, I´ll be there again tomorrow, maybe there will be more males and probably the females will have come out by now too.
I wish you a good season, best regards, Rainer | |
