Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

A couple of pics of my taipans. Lacking the "natural" looking substrate but makes cleaning easier.

Hi Steve

Very nice indeed!! What sizes are the enclosures? I keep my Papuan taipans individually and in cages of the size 1.2m x 0.8m x 0.5m (LxWxH). They seem to do well in such relatively small enclosures; however, they are lightning fast and I recently had an incidence in which one of my big females hopped out of the cage faster than I could manage to close it.

Hi Klaus, My enclosures are same length as yours but slightly narrower at 600 mm. Never had one come out at speed but they will generally venture out just to have a look at what's going on, very curious and I believe, intelligent animals. It actually makes hooking them easier than if they were to stay inside.

I can only speak for mine of course, I find them quite calm, very alert and a little nervous at first until physical contact with the hook is made.( I do always use the hook with these guys just in case) I have never had a problem with them being high strung or aggressive although I have been told of some keepers who need to run them through the water bowl before removing from the enclosure just to settle them down.

So they are calmer then say P.textilis or some other high strung elapids that is very intresting to me Smile despite the taipans rep from what ive read and seen from them here and what you have said. They do seem rather calm like you said and alert I like the coastal and the papuan taipan's personally Smile

their bad reputation was what kept me from owning them for quite a few years, just wasn't sure I was going to be comfortable and competent looking after them.
I have not found that reputation to be deserved.
I do not have any eastern browns so cannot compare with them sorry.

Well reputation unfortunately is what a lot of the highly venomous elapids have unfortunately. I think Black mamba's and Taipan's have a undeserved one as there seems to be a lot of myth around them.

I disagree here... I have had taipans that are calm and I have had others at the opposite end of the spectrum. Dealing with a taipan that does not want to behave is not an easy or pleasant experience. I find eastern browns alot easier as they tend to be more predictable. Like most other elapids there are calm and nervous individuals.

Cheers
Scott
