| Is this A lubricus lubricus? For my interest: how do You handle them (regarding the relaively mild venom)? | |

| Hi @Adrew: Gratulations! Nice little babies @Günter: Many people handle them with their bare hands, but thats unnessecary, they are so easy with the snakehook, no need to take them with your hands I think they are easy to start with "hots", you could ask Afred Wallner, I think he got some CB 08 left (bro's and sisters of mine) Best regards | |

| Great shot, the second, Markus but crop it to portrait format and it will be even better!
Thanks for the tip, but my time with "hots" is definitely a few years away. My twins are 7 now and I do not want venomous snakes in here until they are more "reasonable".

| Hi,
No, not really. Better is a diffusor on the flash, a white piece of plastic or something like that. Otherwise some highlights are good for a picture IMHO.
Cheers, Guenter | |

| Hi Guenter yes these are A. l. lubricus. Andrew has been trying very hard to make sure that both parents are from the same locality to breed lovely pure animals. It looks like he got it right. | |

| Thanks for the compliments to everybody.
Guenter , when I was taking this photos of the snakes they were jumping out of the tub and trying to fall on the floor off the table , as an emergency reaction I am catching them with my bare hands , I did not want them to fall and hurt themselves so I take the chance , none of the animals were biting me. I have two peoples who were bitten by this snakes and there was no effect of the venom so far.

| No effect? Not even local? Interesting!
I read something about bites here: http://www.seitenwinder.de/rubriken/bissberichte/aspidelapslubricus.htm (sadly in German).
Mostly local effects.
Anyway: Good luck with the hatchlings. Beautiful snakes IMHO.
Cheers, Guenter | |

| The venom of Asipidelaps lubricus lubricus contains different neurotoxic components. But the yield isn´t much. I read something about 35 mg - 70 mg. But lubricus lubricus should be saver than other Aspidelaps http://www.venomdoc.com/downloads/2003_BGF_Colubroidea_RCMS.pdf - Quote :
- In the African Aspidelaps
lubricus, 3FTx and PLA2 toxins,20–22 with toxicities comparable to those of African species of Naja (Cobra), have been purified. Consistent with these findings, the venom is rich in molecular masses characteristic of 3FTx, and also contains 19 kDa components (possibly C-type lectins). - Quote :
- Aspidelaps
species (coral and shield-nose cobras) are very popular pet venomous snakes due to their small size, colorful pattern and reputed inability to cause medically significant envenomings. However, the large number and quantity of 3FTx molecular masses suggest that these species may be dangerous, and lethal bites are in fact on record.52 52 52. van Egmond KC. S. Afr. Med. J. 1984; 66: 714. Cheers Fabian

| Very nice photos and congratulations on the clutch. I have a question on the venoms though, I keep a. l. cowlesi. Is their venom more potent than that of a.l. lubricus? | |

- Bites from these snakes have been considered potentially
dangerous (Visser and Chapman 1978) and documented fatalities, although rare, have occurred from both A. lubricus (Branch 1979) and A. scutatus (van Egmond 1984). The venom of all species ( lubricus ) may be same toxic. I read certain papers and I think only the venom of A. scutatus is even more potent. But I would handel all species not bare hand. Here is an interesting paper http://www.teraechis.cz/Web_somalia/images/Jedovati_hadi/PDFs/Broadley%20&%20Baldwin.pdf Cheers Fabian
