Naja melanoleuca behavier

Hi,

I have a male here, about 1 meter in length, and he is really a sedate boy. Now I read that they become more "intensive" by getting larger. How is your experience?

It`s the third melanoleuca I got. The last pair was about one meter too, and has had more will to stay their snake. The first male was a bit nervous but exploded just after carried back into his enclosure....

So my question is:
Do melanoleucas become more relaxed by growing to adult or do they become more uncomfortable? Or is both unpredictable? Normally I would say they become calmer.

Some animals calm down and some just remain grumpy. It depends on the snakes personality. Nice N. Melanoleuca.

Melanoleuca are always a bit tricky. Being one of the "smarter" naja in my opinion means that a calm snake is not that much safer. I have seen them go from docile to a full bite without even raising a hood.

I used to own a CB adult pair (~1.8 m each) of South-African melanoleuca.
Tamer than most ratsnakes I have crossed in my life.
Point is I believe they grew calmer as they aged.

Because I was 11 years old at the time my folks thought it would be better for me to get these giants a new home.

Thats the point. REMAIN grumpy or settle down. I don`t remember the forum it was but there was one writing about his relaxed and "calm" mela youngster, some other told him that they get more "aggresive" if larger.

As i said, it´s my third mela and just one of them was a sucker, but exploded just AFTER recaging him.

The pictured one is fearless and shows absolutely no "aggression" no nervousness but he is incredible inquisitive. If someone enters the room his head comes out of his stash. I think he will become a fairly and nice to handle snake if adult. Now there comes another who said that chances are good that they change their mind. Thats why I ask.

nice to meet you here. And what about the ones who do nothing but inspecting the situation and the air? It is how it is. My actually melanoleuca seems to be desensitized from the beginning.

Three melanoleucas, three different Charackters, but just one of them a pighead. Actually a good foundation to build a better reputation.

I have a pair N. melanoleuca aswell and they're around 120-130 cm. I've kept them for
6 months and they seem to have calm down a bit. They are still very interested in anything that goes on in the room, and very active snakes. With that being said, they are very unpredictable and can switch from laid back to hyper speed in a heartbeat.

They are by far the most interesting snakes i've ever kept but I can't really say that my male is worse than my female etc. I think, as with most snakes, they will grow to be more
calm, but they are all induviduals, so who knows Smile

My friend(richard mastenbroek)and me pic up a forest cobra and it was a real bad A** even when it,s cold,so you can understand when it,s warm up.
The most people say there agressive and i think they have a bad temperament.

I have been keeping a pair of Naja melanoleuca, the South African variety, for the last three years and they are relatively calm snakes now. The male is around 214cm+ and the female is around 230cm+. I really need to tape them so I can get an accurate measurement. When I first got them they were somewhat crazy, with the female being the worst out of the two. She was quick to advance when I opened her enclosure with her mouth gaped open and biting everything in sight. Now they are mostly calm and give me less problems than one of my snouted cobras. Every now and then they decide they want on the floor of my snake room and try and bolt off but they don't advance on me like they used to. Usually they are good on a hook and just let me manipulate them as I need. Of course all of them will be different, but that's my experience with my pair. -Jamie

I get a feeling that South-African melanoleuca differ from West-Africans in temperament.
They sound more fired up than the S.A. animals.
I have never kept West - Africans before though. Just a guess by the sound of things.
