Richard hello Richard.
We here in eastern Finland got plenty of black adders, havent seen any red ones here ever. I hardly go out and Herp in Holland as we do not have native Elapids but when I go out I go mostly to the spot in the map placed below. Its a protected and private owned area and they have a nice population of Vipera berusThese are some of the animals I have seen their on the spots I pointed out. A nice red adder as well is there for years now and still is absolutly gorgous. [img][/img] In the same area can be allot of Natrix natrix found non venomous but still a funny snake to catch especiall when they play dead. and some habitat pictures cheers Richard

| That population is very vulnerable Richard. I know that place for quite some years and the population is under high presure. It's getting more difficult to spot an adder year after year. I'm affraid all vipers over there will be gone in one or two decades. The genepool is simply too small to keep populations healthy. Also the 'livingspace' is getting smaller by tree-growth. BUT luckily they started nature-development and I've seen many Natrix natrix, which are doing great. I hope this project will safe the adders. At the other side of the road is a more healthy population. So if those areas will be connected within a few years, then there might be a possibility the genepool will be big enough to safe the adders over there. Maybee it is better not to show that map on the internet with streetnames on it (you can blur the names in Photoshop) Cheers, Harold | |

I just was reading a article about some melanistic Vipera berus in Holland, so I should go out and find some for the photo.
