| Tub 1 update. First up didn't want to go with the idea of real rocks in these tubs i'm doing at the moment & so tried my hand at making fake 1's out of polystyrene & cement. Seem to look o'kay just have to do away with the "squareness" but hope to hide with either fake plants or real plants, branches & some logs. Next pics showing the amount of morning sun entering the tub (pic taken 10.30am & last week of winter) & substrate of aquarium gravel, sand & coco peat. I think I may use plants in pots & rotate them as required. I'm planning on having my Notechis out here all year round as they can still take advantage of what winter sun is available. Just a progress pic of Tub 2 CHEERS. | |

| Very nice, Nigel. Lots of work, but very rewarding I am sure.
I recall years ago when I first met him, Brian Bush kept tigers, dugites (Pseudonaja affinis) and gwardars (P. nuchalis, probably now mengdeni) in open-topped rainwater tanks, maybe 20ft diameter, sunk into the ground. He had several of these and housed them separately. He had a number of mallee roots piled up in the centre as their "hide".
These were old corrugated iron water tanks, with sides about 5ft high. It was escape-proof but I wondered about bird predators. He said he hadn't had any issues with them, though. Not sure if he kept any death adders that way, but there would be no reason not to I guess.
However, before you start wondering about neighbours' cats, etc, this was on a large sheep and wheat farm about 40km out of Esperance. Very isolated and the species were endemic to the region.
I think if you have the space and you're in a climate which is amenable to the species, this is a great way to keep your snakes - though I wouldn't try it with species like taipans mambas!
Great to see the progress. I envy you!

| Just done a revamp of the lids to my outdoor pits, 2 down 2 to go. Finding it alot easier gaining access for jobs being required. The old lid set-up, large, chance of escape at rear by having 2.2 Notechis in here(1.5 front to rear), nuisance for quick jobs like water, cleaning, feeding etc. My new set-up, alot easier to gain access into, welded mesh on top with the same bird netting underneath making it more sturdy, added a "canopy" for adverse weather, having said that they spend their time in the rain! Apart from their hide at least they have some dry area during those times to use if they want. The back half of lid is also hinged for total access. Maybe just a paint now & that's it-until I get another "vision" ha ha. | |

| Amazing. If I ever felt confident in my ability to keep majestic animals such as yours, I am certain I would do my utmost to emulate your excellence. The local Zoo & Botanical Garden has enclosures which do not even merit comparison. This is truly how keeping of venomous animals should be done, surely! | |
