| Hello David, this is a beautiful snake but are you absolutely sure about the locality?
Do you have any photos of the parents?
Cheers, Rainer

| Hello David, V. ammodytes from the Lake Skutari-area are extremely variable in pattern and color. You can find any color in V. ammod. there that is possible within the whole species at any location, though most are grey or greyish-brown. And you can very rarely find animals that look very much like typical V. ammodytes meridionalis (pattern, shape). As your´s looks very much like meridionalis from Macedonia, I asked you wether you are sure about the locality and if you can post any photos of the parents. I did not want to say it is not from the Skutari-area. It would just be a specimen that has a pattern that is very rare in that area. But maybe it would be interesting for you to be sure and to be able to find the right female for breeding with this male.
You can find photos of a number of Skutaro-Ammodytes here: http://www.venomland.net/t3266-more-scutari-vipera-a-ammodytes and more in other posts on Venomland.
No question, that is a beautiful male and he´ll probably be more beautiful when he´ll be bigger. Congratulations, Rainer

| If you find out that it really is a Lake Skutari ammodytes, you can take any female from that area, it´s just a matter of taste. If it´s not, maybe it´s possible to find out where your male is from and then find a fitting female. I don´t think that should be too difficult.
Photos of the parents and siblings (and maybe grandparents or other relatives) would be very helpful. What color is the underside of his tail?
Cheers, Rainer | |

| Hello Jean-Henri, then the location is clear. Like I wrote, the question came to me because the male has a very unusual though not impossible pattern for a Skutari-V. ammod., more typical for V. a. meridionalis.
Hello David, so it should be no problem to find a beautiful lady for him.
Good luck with him and for your way as a keeper of venomous snakes. V. ammodytes is a good start.

| I suppose it´s a male but I´m not absolutely sure. I´ve seen (very few) females that, judging from their pattern and color / contrast looked more like males than many males. The only way to be sure about their gender was looking at their tails. On this photo I´m not even sure about the shape of the tail. A photo of the tail from underneath would bring certainty.
Cheers, Rainer | |
