| I've found a few more hot lifers since my last post. After moving east from California late last summer, I spent a bit of time last autumn and this spring looking for timbers, to no avail, (alive at least) but that changed at the end of may when I ended up finding 3 in 2 nights, covering two states. I only got vouchers of two of 'em, but here's the best one of the three in my opinion. Crotalus horridus - Timber rattlesnake from eastern Oklahoma Another target the 2nd night was this little lifer Sistrurus miliarius streckeri - Western pygmy These two little fireballs made an appearance while surveying a flooded area for amphibians: Agkistrodon piscivorous leucostoma - Western cottonmouth Over the past weekend, some buddies and I made the long drive up to western Kansas to meet up with a few people and look for prairie rattlesnakes. We struck out the first night, but hit some new area the second morning and managed to find 5 in an hour and a half or so by searching the bases of yucca plants. Crotalus viridis - Prairie rattlesnake (in situ) We ended up cruising a few more that night as well including this handsome little male: I'll throw in a little assortment of others for good measure, though. haha Heterodon platirhinos - Eastern hognose (also from Kansas) Coluber constrictor priapus - Southern black racer Lampropeltis calligaster calligaster - Prairie kingsnake Lampropeltis triangulum syspila - Red milksnake Thamnophis radix - Plains gartersnake Thanks for checking it out and hope everyone's having a good 2011 herp season! | |

This year is my first year living in range of them, so they've been a snake I've hoped to come across for years. Thanks for the compliments!

Thanks for the compliments! Sorry, maybe a repeating question, since I am a newbie here; did you move recently? Seeing them in their natural habitat (not just Heterodons but also other more "hot" ones) is a real treasure. I am glad you are sharing photos of them with us.

I just moved toward the end of last year from northern California, close to 1000 miles from any Heterodon range. haha
