| These are absolutely fantastic photos!
What kind of lighting set-up do you use for these? You manage to produce some beautiful soft, even lighting in many of these photos.
Cheers,
Wolfgang | |

| Those shots were all done with two flashes. One Canon 580 EX on the camera (with a stofen bouncer applied - a piece of milky plastic on the flash) and one Canon 420 EX on the side of the snake (also with boncer).
The postprocessing was more tricky. I partly darkened the picture. That's not easy if You want to maintain the illusion of some "natural lighting" ... hope it worked.
One hint: If You need soft light and You have photoshop: double the layer, apply the filter "soft light" with about strength 2 (reduce the grain to 0 or 1 and set the contrast to 15-17) and then reduce the layer opacity until it fits.
Cheers, Guenter | |

| Thanks for that Gunther.
Where do you find the "soft light" filter? I don't find anything like that in the Filter menu. I do get various soft light options under Filter-> Render-> Lighting effects, but nothing corresponding to what you wrote, i.e., with options for strength 2 or grain and contrast settings.
Cheers,
Wolfgang | |

| Wolfgang, I have the German PS. You can find it there:
Filter/Verzerrungsfilter/Weiches Licht Parameters: "Körnung" 1-2 "Lichtmenge" 1-3 "Kontrast" 13-17
You have to try out the parameters - depends on the picture.
In fact I don't know the exact english menu names for that.
Be sure that the image has 8bit colour mode - not 16bit. | |

| OK, that makes sense.
The English commands are:
Filter -> Distort -> Diffuse glow
Graininess Glow amount Clear amount
Brilliant, thanks very much Günther!

| Nice photo, as usual, Guenter! But you've got me to where I suspiciously inspect the tongues on your photos now to see if they are real or implants. It doesn't really matter either way, but I am curious. | |

| The Flavo tongue is real. The Macrops tongue is real too, but in another shot. | |

| Recently we had the Upper Austrian championships for art photography. I participated in 3 of 4 topics: Nature (incl. animals), People and Sport photography. The flavomaculatus won an special medal (five special medals out of about 450 pictures) for me. I got a really fine result this year: 3rd and bronce medal for my people shots 5th in nature 8th in sports 5th overall That's not bad for me as 170 photographers competed with about 1800 photographs. My thanks to Peter for the possibility to photograph the Trimeresurus flavomaculatus (and all the other snakes). Most of my nature shots were of course snakes | |
