| Can anyone here tell me from this picture for sure if it is a pair of Echis carinatus sochureki? I was thinking that on the left side could be a male, because of its smaller head and it is not so heavy builded and it is a bit smaller. Their tails are by their size now pretty much in the same length. Both are good eaters. Please correct me if I'm wrong. | |

| Hello Albert, From this view they both look like females to me. They look like juveniles/semiadults which makes it more difficult too. Probing would make you sure. With a photo from underneath it would be easier, and you can do scale-counts (SC) from underneath more easily which may tell you their sex too but not with absolute certainty.
Regards, Rainer | |

| Hi Rainer, Thanks for the reply, I think you're right. Today I photograph them from underneath and do the scale-count from the neck to the tail several times by both. The smaller one has them about 168 and the bigger one about 170. Then I was trying to find any information on ventral scales for this subspecies but I had no success. The only reliable information is that the males have much longer tail than the females, what is not in this case. Both animals were send to me as a pair from this year. Now I have to find a real male who will be glad of these two girls Here are some pics from the underneath Smaller one Bigger one | |

| Hi Albert,
the shape of the tails also looks like females´tails but the count of the subcaudalia is 21-22 in the smaller and over 25 in the bigger specimen as far as I can count them from your photos. The difference between these two counts can mean that you have a pair. Can you tube and probe them? Maybe you can make photos of the tails or the original photos have a better resolution than the compressed ones on Venomland and you can make an exact count. The SC-count usually tells you more than the ventralia as the numbers have less overlapping. 168 versus 170 is almost no difference but these numbers may be in the overlapping-zone.
Best regards, Rainer | |

| Hi Rainer, From the pictures above I did a cut of their tails for a better view and by both I count about 29 subcaudalia so I guess that does not make sense to probe them. Btw. thanks for your help, I appreciate it. Here are the pics... Smaller female Bigger female | |

| Hi Albert,
you´re right. 29 in both means both probably are the same sex and the tails´shapes are typical for females. I magnified your first photos but the resolution was so weak that the I couldn´t count the subcaudal scales properly.
I wonder why none of the forum-members that keep (and maybe breed) Echis posted an answer.????
I wish you luck in finding a suitable male soon, Rainer | |

| Sorry, I can't help with the identification, but those are some truly gorgeous animals! I haven't seen many of those species before, but A. contorix is a very familiar sight where I live, and that is a very accurate habitat for one! I believe that those Atheris have to be one of my new favorite snakes. Amazing work! | |
